Discover the story behind Walkway to Ceylon — from family roots to a dining experience built on tradition and heart.

ROOTED IN HERITAGE,

BUILT WITH PURPOSE

Walkway to Ceylon is a family-led journey rooted in heritage, resilience, and purpose. The journey began in 2020, shortly after the passing of our mother. Our parents were hoteliers in Sri Lanka, and hospitality was part of our everyday life. Through them, we learned that food carries stories, culture, and connection.

After losing our mum, Sam and I felt a deep responsibility to carry forward our parents’ legacy. We wanted to preserve the flavours we grew up with and share authentic Sri Lankan cuisine with the wider community.

Although neither of us came from a traditional hospitality background, our strengths complemented each other. Sam is an Electronic Engineer by qualification with a lifelong passion for cooking, while I come from a Technology, Finance, and Accounting background, having worked as Head of Finance in a commercial environment. That balance of creativity and structure became the foundation of Walkway to Ceylon.

We started with a food truck to understand the industry from the ground up. During this phase, our son Shane — just 15 years old at the time — supported us through early morning markets and events. The food truck quickly gained popularity, catering demand increased, and the need for a production kitchen followed.

In 2021, we leased a space in Coorparoo for catering and a small café. The community embraced us, often calling us a “hidden gem,” and encouraged us to open as a dine-in venue. As demand continued to grow, we moved to a larger space under the name Walkway to Ceylon, completing our journey from food truck to destination dining.
